CHROMOGENESIS – “PRACTICING PHOTOGRAPHY BY OTHER MEANS”
The ‘Chromogenesis’ series responds to the question “How will you go about finding that thing the nature of which is totally unknown to you?” I came across this quote by the philosopher, Meno, in the book A Field Guide to Getting Lost by Rebecca Solnit during my MFA research and immediately connected with the idea of ‘getting lost’ which for me equates with the idea of playing freely. I was keen to explore uncharted territory in photography and embrace the unexpected in a collaboration with materials that have traditionally been subjugated to the service of the technical image, treated as nothing more than a substrate. Using the science of the analogue chemistry of colour photography in ways that were never intended, reveals unexpected and exciting new possibilities.
This series is a subset of the overall Chromogenesis project and is identified as Chromogenesis (PfF) Flow. This work explores the surface interaction where chemistries flow into one another, exploiting the fluid dynamics of chemistry and the material nature of the films surface to form images that emerge from molecular level interaction. These micro formations of colour dye become large layered forms of colour in the printing process, creating layered worlds that feel like macro aerial views of unknown landscapes or micro interior worlds.
The works below are a highlight of the full body of work, if you would like to see more, please let me know and I can set up a viewing room for you.
